The 2009 Naval Intelligence Foundation Award, in honor of ADM Robert L. J. Long, USN (Ret.), was presented to MIDN 1/C Jacob Roy Cates, USN, at the Naval Academy Prizes and Awards Ceremony, on Thursday, May 21st.  Midshipshipman Cates, who was commissioned an Ensign, USN, the following day, was a Bowman Scholar, and received a Draper Laboratory Fellowship in Operations Research at MIT.  He also was the recipient of the Professor Henry M. Roberts, Jr., Prize presented to that midshipman of the graduating class who, in completing a major in mathematics, has shown a high degree of proficiency in mathematics and an outstanding potential for success in continued study.  Ensign Cates is slated for the nuclear submarine program.
CAPT Roger Granum, the Foundation’s Vice President and Treasurer, presented Midshipman Cates with the now-traditional NIF solid brass “spyglass” and a commemorative plaque.  He will also receive a 5-year membership in Naval Intelligence Professionals.
