Current ADM B.R. Inman Awardee
LT Brian Schulz, USN has been selected as this year’s winner of the Naval Intelligence Foundation’s Admiral B. R. Inman Award for Excellence. LT Schulz received his award on 15 September 2009 in a ceremony just outside Glasgow Hall at the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) in Monterey, California. Trustee CAPT Frank Kelly, USN-ret, representing the Foundation and Senior Intelligence Officer, CAPT Jennith Hoyt, USN, representing NPS, presided over the ceremony, which was also attended by a number of LT Schulz’s fellow students and faculty. In addition to receiving a five year membership in NIP, LT Schulz was presented with a plaque and solid brass spyglass, both of which are engraved with the recipient’s name to commemorate the occasion.
LT Schulz is the first Naval Cryptologist (1610) to receive an award from the Foundation. His selection now is most appropriate considering the recent movement of our communities into the Information Dominance arena under the direction and guidance of DNI, VADM Jack Dorsett. Lt Schulz earned the Inman award based on his outstanding academic performance as well as the superb quality of his master’s thesis on the effects of the Joint Multi-mission Electro-Optical System (JMMES) electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) turret on littoral maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) operations. His thesis investigates how a JMMES equipped SH-60 variant aircraft affects US ISR capabilities in the littoral regions, specifically in the areas of Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW), Surface Warfare (SUW), Maritime Interdiction Operations (MIO), and Search and Rescue (SAR).
LT Schulz received his Masters Degree in Information Warfare Systems Engineering (IWSE) in September and was recently selected to serve as an Associate Fellow with the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Strategic Studies Group (SSG).
CAPT Kelly’s journey to NPS, Monterey for the presentation of the Inman award would not have been possible without funding support from Booz Allen Hamilton, a corporate sponsor of the Naval Intelligence Foundation.
